On Friday, December 18, 2009, we received 16" of snow in Alleghany County. It was the most snowfall I have seen here in the Blue Ridge Mountains since January 1998. Snow is a real challenge to photograph as it can fool the camera and make the snow look either too dark or too bright, so I have been working on making high dynamic range pictures. To do this, you shoot several images at different exposures and merge them in the computer. There is a big learning curve, but the challenge makes it more fun. This image was created using that technique. Enjoy!

Summer 2009 has been a very unusual summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have had abundant rainfall which has produced lush foliage and understory in the forests. The temperatures have been cooler than in the past few years. It is one of the most beautiful summers I can remember.
