During the time I nursed at Duke University Medical Center on the Oncology units (Bone Marrow Transplant, 9200 and Oncology, 9300), I worked with patients who were nearing the end of their lives. They were confused, frightened, and lonely. I began using photographs that I had taken while traveling in the Blue Ridge Mountains and conversations with them and their families to prepare them for the next journey. I was certified to do "Healing Touch" and used meditative music along with the technique to calm the patients and their families. Often, there was a healing transformation among the patients and families that enabled a peaceful transition.
"The Healing Book" grew out of those times and experiences. We live in a time when there is a more open awareness of the comfort that can be felt when we embrace the experience and share it with our loved ones. When we are willing to let go, say good-bye, and express our love for those we hold dear, there is a peace which descends on us that enables healing to begin even as our family or dear friends leave us.
This healing perspective can be applied to the many losses that occur during our lifetime. There have been many losses in recent years: lost jobs, foreclosure, changes in lifestyle are among many. A healing outlook can help us to begin the recovery process. This book is offered as one of many navigation tools that we might use in our quest.
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler"Ross identified five stages in which we find ourselves at turning points in our lives: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Each of these stages can occur at di!erent times throughout the grief process.
In denial, we feel dazed. and it is as if the occurrence did not actually happen.
When we are in anger, our emotions cause us to turn on ourselves in self"blame. In bargaining, we try to make an exchange in order to avoid the happening. During the deprression stage, we find that we are terribly sad. Finally, after experiencing all of these feelings, we enter a wonderful peace with all that is happening, thus we are in acceptance.
I offer this book in hopes that it will bring a healing perspective to those who are experiencing pain in their lives.
