The New River in Spring Bloom

The New River in Spring Bloom

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky is by no means a waste of time. ~J. Lubbuck

  • The New River is considered to be the second oldest river in the world--second to the Nile. Dates from 10 million to 360 million years have been proposed. It originates near the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock and flows to the North to join the Gauley River in West Virginia and form the Kanawha River after flowing through Northwest North Carolina, Southwest Virginia and into West Virginia. It was designated a protected area by President Bill Clinton in July, 1998.
